Sir Henry Bessemer (1813-1898)

Sir Henry Bessemer was a scientist, engineer and inventor. He is best known for the Bessemer Converter, which turns iron into high quality steel. Not all his projects were so successful. He designed a ferry with a stabilised saloon to counter seasickness. The saloon was stable, but the ferry crashed into a pier in Calais on its first journey because it was impossible to steer.
