Oswald M Denniston (1913-2000)
Oswald M ‘Columbus’ Denniston was well-known in Brixton, through his coffee bar, the Sugar Cane, and later his market stall. Oswald arrived from Jamaica on the Empire Windrush aged 35. Oswald was the first African Caribbean trader in Brixton market when he opened his stall in the 1960s. A pillar of the community and an engaging speaker, Oswald was interviewed by the BBC in 1998, about his experience of arriving on the Windrush.
