James Kershaw MP (1795–1864)

 This type of tomb is called a chest tomb. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, who was the architect of the Natural History Museum, who also designed the adjacent tomb. James himself began his career as a clerk for a cotton spinning company. He later owned mills, became Mayor of Manchester and was elected as a Liberal MP for Stockton.
