George Jennings (1810-1882)

A plumber and manufacturer, George Jennings invented the public toilet. He also campaigned for them to be provided in cities to improve hygiene. His toilets were first installed at the Great Exhibition of 1851. More than 800,000 people used them there, altogether paying over £2,000 to do so. This is the origin of the phrase ‘to spend a penny’.
