Captain John Wimble (1797-1851)

By age 26, John was captaining ships for the East India Company. For years it was the only British company allowed to trade with South and South East Asia. They had their own army and navy, which they used to colonise countries including India. John captained the three ships for them during his career – the London, the Florentia and the Maidstone. Images of the ships are carved on his tomb.
